The Boy From Broome is en route to the FINA World Championships in Budapest after a standout performance at the Australian Open Championships in April.

20-year-old F-Teamer Zac Incerti stormed home in in the 100m freestyle to touch fourth in a time of 49.93, earning himself a spot on the Australian team's 4 x 100m freestyle relay alongside Olympian Cam McEvoy.

The result came as a surprise to the UWA West Coast swimmer who moved from Broome to Perth in 2014 after he was spotted by coach Michael Palfery.

"I wasn't expecting to qualify for the 100m free, I just wanted to have a good race. It was my first time racing against Cam and Kyle Chalmers but I wasn't worried about going up against the big boys. I just went for it because I had nothing to lose," Zac reveals.

Zac will also compete in his pet event, the 100m backstroke, after grabbing the silver with a time of 53.95. It was a new personal best time, with his previous PB of 54.19 set at the 2016 Australian Championships. Not a bad result for his second ever Open Championships!

Being selected for the Australian team means a lot to Zac and he's excited to be over in Europe racing at different meets in the build to Budapest.

"It was really exciting to be selected but it didn't sink in straight away! It wasn't until the day after the meet finished when we were at orientation and they called my name - that's when it really hit home that I was off to the World Championships," he says.

Like any athlete, Zac has developed a few routines that he goes through before a big race. The first thing he does is a walking lap around the pool, just checking it out. After an energy drink he heads to marshalling where he'll chat to people if he knows them, otherwise will sit quietly. The key for Zac is the moment he walks out to the blocks.

"As I leave marshalling, the hoody goes up to pump me up. I don't listen to music because I want to soak up the atmosphere. Before the 100m free the crowd was going wild, that made me tingle it was so cool," he says.

Zac and the rest of the Australian Swim Team are currently making their way across Europe as they compete in a number of meets before settling into a training camp in Budapest. We're looking forward to watching the Boy From Broome make his debut on the international stage!
